Caspian Sea States bolster regional cooperation on oil spill response

Governments around the Caspian Sea have completed a draft regional action plan for addressing major oil spills, driven by increased oil and gas activities in the region. Held in Aktau, Kazakhstan, from October 8-10, representatives from Caspian nations finalized the “Aktau Protocol Plan,” aimed at supporting the Tehran Convention’s regional marine protection goals. The workshop involved testing the plan with the RETOS tool and emphasized the importance of national and regional oil spill contingency plans (OSCPs). Organized by UNEP and IMO, the workshop aimed to strengthen cooperation and compliance with the OPRC Convention on oil pollution response.
