Imperial Oil Ltd will pay Can$120,000 after it pleaded guilty to a wastewater spill that happened at its Kearl oilsands mine in 2023.

Only $2,000 of Imperial’s penalty is a fine; the other $118,000 will go towards a ‘creative’ sentencing project, which regulators will determine in due course.
