Oil spilled from an abandoned underwater fuel line into the Columbia River near the Port of Astoria’s Pier 2, leading to a $2.5 million cleanup effort

On May 29, an abandoned underwater fuel line, about 50 feet long and 12 inches in diameter, became dislodged and began leaking bunker fuel oil into the Port of Astoria’s Pier 2 slipway. According to DEQ spokesperson Michael Loch, it all happened when a structure supporting “a previously unknown legacy fuelling pipeline system beneath Pier 2 failed.” That then resulted in oil discharging from the exposed section of the pipeline.
