ExxonMobil has been ordered to pay £267,000 ($361,000) over five hydrocarbon leaks at its ethylene plant in Mossmorran, Scotland in 2018-19 – each the result of “woefully inadequate” maintenance of insulated overhead pipework found to contain widespread corrosion, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). In a scathing response to the verdict last week, HSE inspector Lindsey Stein said Exxon’s behaviour “beggars belief”.
