Canadian Coastguard issues fortieth update on MSC Baltic III salvage

  • Wreck removal operations continue at the site of the MSC Baltic III in Cedar Cove, Newfundland.
  • The contractor is preparing to install chains and chain pullers to pull the vessel. The contractor is also preparing to install a contaminated water treatment system to treat water as it is removed from holds onboard the MSC Baltic III wreck.
  • Removing cargo containers continues to be a priority. As of this update, 468 cargo containers have been removed from the MSC Baltic III, and 4 containers remain onboard.
  • Hydrogen sulfide levels from the submerged containers continue to be a concern. Experts are on-site to monitor the levels and crews working in the area are taking appropriate precautions. There is no risk to the public.
  • Drone overflights and on-water and shoreside surveys continue as conditions allow, to monitor for pollution.
