A Russian shadow fleet tanker, Caroline Bezengi, under European sanctions, is leaking oil off the coast of Oman following an explosion and after drifting onto rocks in a protected marine area off Oman, near al-Qibliyyah island. Anecdotal reports have suggested that the original explosion may have been caused by a Ukranian limpet mine.  

The Suezmax tanker, reportedly part of Russia’s shadow fleet of over 700 older ships with complex ownership structures, is unresponsive and partially submerged, with satellite images showing an oil slick extending from its port side.

The tanker, which is flagged as Cameroonian but notionally owned by an address in Shanghai, was carrying between 800,000 to 1 million barrels of crude.
