Canadian Coastguard Update on MSC Baltic III Salvage

Wreck removal operations continue at the site of the MSC Baltic III. The safety of workers and the protection of the marine environment continue to be the main priorities.
To date, the wreck has been pulled approximately 53 metres towards the shore. Resolve Marine plans to continue pulling the wreck during high tides for added buoyancy.
Cutting and lightering operations continue onboard the wreck. As of this update, the total tonnage removed from the MSC Baltic III is 4,200 tonnes, approximately 40 percent of the vessel’s total tonnage.
The cableway system constructed to allow access to the MSC Baltic III is in the process of being dismantled. Workers continue to access the vessel using a temporary gangway from shore.
A scrap pad was completed on the shoreline to support the shoreline crane for lightering operations.
Daily shoreline monitoring continues when it is safe to do so, with limited numbers of tar balls and coats observed which teams are cleaning and removing as they are found.
Slight sheening was recently observed outside the wreck. This is to be expected during the removal process, as a quantity of residual fuel remains inside the holds onboard the vessel. An absorbent boom has been placed inside the holds to help prevent the release of pollution.
Pollution response measures will remain in place throughout the wreck removal process.
