This study presents a general framework for coastal oil spill hazard mapping across all Mediterranean coastlines. It addresses uncertainty in coastal hazard due to the variability in transport conditions using a five-year ensemble simulation (2018–2022) performed with the MEDSLIK-II numerical model and 203 spill locations located following a uniform grid between 10 to 50 km from the Mediterranean coast. This setup allows for the isolation of the effect of ocean currents in shaping coastal oil accumulation hotspots. Stranded oil concentrations were fitted to a two-parameter Weibull probability density function, which accounts for the heavy-tailed nature of the oil concentration distribution due to extreme oil arrival events. We consider up to 18 nations’ coastlines in the Mediterranean Sea.
