Following the allision between the Portuguese flagged container ship “Solong” and the U.S. flagged tanker “Stena Immaculate” on March 10th, at 09:47 GMT in the outer anchorage of the Humber estuary, the following is a short update:
– Both vessels were abandoned; the entire ships compliment of the Stena Immaculate survived, however one member of the Solong crew, 38-year-old Filipino Mark Angelo Pernia is still missing, presumed dead
– The Captain of the Solong, 59-year-old Russian national Vladimir Motin of Primorsky, St Petersburg, has been remanded in police custody and charged with gross negligence manslaughter
– Both vessels caught fire, however these have now been extinguished, and HM coastguard updates give the condition of both vessels as “ stable and salvage operations ongoing”
– The Stena Immaculate was carrying 220,000 barrels of aviation kerosene but only one hold appears to have been punctured by the Solong – the effects of the hydrocarbon pollution are not thought to be widespread, however it appears that the Solong was also carrying one or more containers of Nurdles which have burst and released the plastic pellets into the ocean. In some cases the heat from the fires has fused the nurdles together and large agglomerated chunks of plastic pellets have washed up on the shoreline.
