Nurdles: Beach cleanup continues post North Sea allision, EU finalizes rules on plastic pollution at sea

Ongoing monitoring and response efforts are taking place along the UK coastline following the recent Allision between the Solong and the Stena Immaculate.  Along with ongoing improvement by the IMO regarding stowage and transport of this raw material, there is a need to establish local and national response plans which will better prepare responsible authorities to act fast and mitigate the damage from plastic spills.  The UK television channel ITV carried this interesting clip recently:

The EU has finalized a new regulation aimed at reducing microplastic pollution caused by plastic pellets. Representatives from the European Parliament and the EU Council agreed to provisional terms on measures designed to improve handling practices across the entire plastic pellet supply chain, both on land and at sea.  Source: Maritime Executive
